General Questions

What oil do I need?

The two common types of fuel used for heating oil are Kerosene (burning oil, 28-second heating oil) and Red Diesel (Gas Oil, cherry oil, 35-second oil).

Kerosene is most frequently used; however, you should check your tank for confirmation. Looking at the colour of the fuel is one indication; Kerosene is clear yellow liquid and Red Diesel (you guessed it) is red. If there is no way of seeing the colour of your fuel, check with your engineer or the previous owners.

What is Heating Oil?

Heating oil, or kerosene, is a product of crude oil and the most widely used substitute for mains gas in the UK. Areas which aren’t connected to a mains gas pipeline rely on heating oil as a way to heat their homes and provide a supply of hot water.

What is Premium Heating Oil?

Premium heating oil is kerosene pre-mixed with an additive. This additive helps keep your system running smoothly, therefore, prolonging the life of your boiler and reducing the need for unexpected callouts.

What is Aga Heating Oil?

AGA heating oil is similar to premium heating oil in that it contains a premixed additive. However, this additive works to reduce the number of operating problems associated with AGA and Rangemaster cookers.

What do additives do?

There are many additives on the market; each providing a solution to common problems fuel tanks and systems experience.

For example, Exocet Premium Heating Oil Additives claim to:

  • Lower carbon emissions
  • Stabilise fuel
  • Inhibit sludge formation
  • Reduce deposit build up
  • Improve system efficiency
How often should I get my boiler serviced?

OFTEC recommend getting your boiler should be serviced annually by an OFTEC registered technician. During a boiler service, engineers check and repair faults that are causing a decrease in efficiency. In addition, they ensure your boiler isn’t emitting harmful carbon monoxide.
